About OneFarm Share
South Africa faces two contrasting truths: every year, more than 2 million tonnes of fresh produce goes to waste and, at the same time, almost 1 in 4 households has inadequate access to food. With a food system in crisis, we need a holistic approach to drive long-term solutions.
Founded in late 2020, OneFarm Share delivers impact across the agriculture value chain by helping overcome hunger and by promoting food security. OneFarm Share sources produce by way of donations from commercial farmers and agro-processors, and through offtake arrangements with small scale farmers. The programme reduces fruit and vegetable waste from commercial producers while simultaneously developing small scale farmers, this approach drives inclusivity, sustainability, and resilience of the country’s food system. This is enabled through OneFarm Impact NPC which ensures the effective deployment of funds received from local and international donors.
Since inception, OneFarm Share has achieved the following:
- Sourced more than 25 million kilogrammes of fresh fruit and vegetables for almost 3,000 registered charities, across all 9 provinces, feeding more than 1.2 million South Africans on a regular basis.
- Contributed more than 100 million balanced and nutritious meals.
- Supported over 550 small scale farmers, 30% of them women , in their pursuit of commercial success through market access, agronomy and business support, and opportunities to scale up.
- Optimised donor funding to stretch beyond traditional hunger relief, OneFarm Share’s unique approach builds thriving rural businesses and communities at scale.
- Received donations of commercial food production and processing excess, thereby reducing the frequency of open-dumping and use of landfills, promoting sustainability, and reducing the ‘economic loss’ of farming inputs such as water and energy resources.
